So I was looking at my knifefish tank today, and I noticed something odd on the face of one of the two peacock eels that are in there. His head was sticking out of the log that the eels live in and there was some brown stuff on his face. its hard to describe in any other way than he had some "brown crap" on his face. not like any typical fungus i've seen before, but there was definately something there. It looked like he had a beard or something of brown stuff. Its possible that it's just plant mulm or pieces of dead leaves, but anyways It's still got me worried. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

What are the odds that it's something to worry about vs. just some crap on his face from digging? I'm not really sure how long it's been there as I don't often see the eels except when they're sticking their heads out of the log.

Is this a cause for alarm?

Thanks everyone

my guys always play in the mulm of my tanks.. and get "crap on their faces" all the time lol.. No I wouldn't worry unless it seems to get stuck, stringy plant particles can get wrapped around their heads almost like hair. I've never had issues with it, but it's something I do have concern over on occassion. of my now 6 spiney eels.. all 6 have had plant mulm faces at one point or another, hehe. It's kinda funny sometimes.

Yeah my TT eel does the same. It's pretty annoying when I'm trying to take pics of it. It seems like almost every time it is in a good position for me to take a pic of it, and it's actually holding still (which it rarely does), it has the "mulm face", so I can't get a good pic.
