Hi

Firstly would like to say hi to everyone, first post and all.

I have kept tropicals for many years..just the standard smaller stuff and a big ol oscar

Had a yr or 3 break after the oscar kicked the can (get it like oscar the grouch lol)

I would like to keep some Peacocks however i since sold all my equipment, i am wondering and obviously the bigger the better but can i have some ideas on tank sizes for peacocks

i understand a 300 gallon tank would be great for a small group of peacocks but what about just 1 or 2. my local store gets them every month or so and they are rather small an inch or 3. So i am sure for 6-8months they would be fine in a 30-40 gallon tank but then after that.. would a 75 gallon be enough for 1 or 2 or would i need closer to 100 or more?

Again this is my first go into keeping "Bigger fish" other then my oscar who got pretty big hence the basic questions. i would prefer to ask these now and be prepared for the fish rather then not and have too small a setup and have the fish suffer.

Cheers

If the bass are going to be your only fish. Them I would recommend just buy the one tank your going to need for long term. Usually grow out tanks only exist because you have smaller fish that can't go into the larger tank due to larger inhabitants. Or saving up money for the bigger tank. I would say 200 gallons + even if its just one or two

yes you need at least a 200 gallon to ouse a peacock bass for life. They grow to about 2 feet!

Yeah instead of doing a string of tank upgrades along the way, just pick up a larger tank. In my opinion, a minimum would be a 180 (6 x 2 x 2) but that would only be temporary so a 220 (6 x 30" wide x 2 tall) would be better for life.

Well I'm thinking it might be better to just get a smaller tank and stick some largemouth in it and when they get too big put them back in the pond and replace them with small ones..the circle of life lol

200gallon aquarium is way to big for my room lol..i was thinking like 125gal

oh well better me upset now then get fish and have them suffer...i see those fighting fish in the little tubs at petco and get upset so i probably shouldn't do the same with the peacocks :(

on a side note...where can one get such a big aquarium as i can only find 55gal and smaller at petco... obviously i can't afford a custom one..Where would people recommend i look for a good deal..i am checking craigslist but any others??

I would suggest getting a 300+ if you can. The general time line is 40g or 55g (3''-7'') then 100g up to 180g (8''-15'') then 240g or larger (15'' +).
This has been my experience. I would say 240g is the bare minimum for a 15'' bass and they hit this mark at around 3yrs or so. Good luck and Welcome to the Cichness.

Craig's list is going to be your best bet. I got three of my best tanks on Craigs list. Even if you buy something big keep looking for bigger. My rule of thumb is keep an extra big tank around. You'll never know when you might need it.

Thanks again for all the advice...i think i might have to rethink this as i just don't have the room for a 300 gallon aquarium lol...i was debating between a large fish tank for peacocks or going to the dark side and setting up a marine tank...i think the salty sea might prove to be the winner
