Is there any difference between

1 - Aulonocara Stuartgranti - Maleri Island

and

2- Aulonocara Baenschi

I am growing out some A. Baenschi and was curious if there is a difference. Anyone ever keep both?

They are from different collection points I believe.

Yes there is a difference, it is like saying a Neolamprologus leleupi and Neolamprologus modestus are the same. They are different species of fish.

How do you tell the difference between the 2?

Maleris generally have a broader body, if I am not mistaken

Aulonocara Baenschi are smaller when full grown. It is tough in color, they are from different part of the lake as well. So collecting them in wild helps ID them. Both have been linebreed in hobby to maximize yellow.

side note. I had males of both in a show tank. The Aulonocara Baenschi was dominate, and the Marleri island would not color up.

The differences that I can tell is...

Aulonocara Baenschi tends to have a more downward curved nose/mouth.

Aulonocara Stuartgranti Maleri Island has brighter almost neon yellow color and the Aulonocara Baenschi is more of a deep sunflower color.

Some time its hard to tell the difference, I have seen some Aulonocara Baenschi that I would sware were Aulonocara Stuartgranti Maler.

One of my friends had the same problem but the Aulonocara Baenschi was slightly bigger and older.
