Where the wild things are..
Hey guys my peacocks have been pretty healthy. I bought like 6 of them 2 weeks ago, and they are healthy as can be. The only thing strange is I see them swim than they lean on their sides and dash forward through the sand rubbing their sides on the sand real quick. Basically I think they are scratching. If this bad?

Details: I have 6, 2.5 inchers in a 60 gallon.
I have a API master test kit, and everything is suppose to be where it is at.
(ph 8.2, n02 0 ppm, n03 5.0, ammonia 0 ppm)
My n03 is the only thing that is not 0 when it's suppose to be, but it's at its lowest possible so it should be no harm.

Any suggestions on why they are doing this scratching behavior? Is it normal? I appreciate any help given!

hahaha it's okay, yeah they seem healthy and eat like little monster so i'm not so worried.

Nitrate doesn't need to be 0. As long as it's lower than 40 you are fine.

The PH is also fine.

I have found africans seem to scratch more than most other fish. I'm not sure why. I would keep an eye on them. If they continue to be healthy and don't develop something like ich, then I wouldn't worry about it.

all of my cichlids do it all the time in in the sand. At first I thought It might be gill flukes but I asked around about it and alot of people said its normal. It has been 5 months since the tank has been set up and I inquired about the scratching 3 months ago. They are still scratching all the time and seem to be heathly and have seen no sideeffects from this behaviour so I am deeming it as normal i guess.

haha dang I'm glad to hear that cichlids tend scratch more than other fishes. thanks alot guys, you all put a lot of ease off of my shoulders!

Mine do it all the time as well. With All params being good I usually use aquarium salt in the water and it tends to help them stop scratching. Use the recommended dose on the container. I think its 1 tablespoon per 5 gals.
