saw what was labled as a pearl cichlid at my favorite pet shop,
my first guess was a green terror or gold saum, but on closer inspection,
i was sure it was some sort of Earth Eater.
it looked male with elongated fins, but i dont know, was only new, so it was still pale.
had a good set of teeth on it, and it was about 8-9''.
I really liked this fish, but i need info on it first.

anyway, tell me what you know.

cheers

I ended up buying this fish, and i dont realy think it is a brasiliensis, the head is just way to round and very broard, but its head is an aqua blue/green-ish, with a speckled gold/yellow body with a black line going from its eye to its tail, on the side the line forms into a blotch then thins out towards the tail.

The only fish I've ever heard being referred to as a Pearl cichlid was a type of Flowerhorn.I just made a thread asking what type of Flowerhorn the hybrid section thought I had and was told it looks like a Pearl cichlid...

The only two 'pearls' I've heard are the Mother of Pearl Cichlid, which is the above Brasiliensis ... and the Pearlscale Cichlid, another common name for the Blue Texas, aka Carpentis ...

The problem with common names though, is every region of even the same country can have differant common names for the same fish. Heck, I've seen differant common names in differant LFS in the same city for some fish.

Astatheros Rhytisma has also been called pearl cichlid.

Honestly, it could be anything. Lfs tend to just slap names on anything they don't really know the name of. Your best bet is to get a pic, even if it's a crappy cell phone pic, so it can be identified. From your description it does not sound like any geophagus I know. Your description kind of paints the picture of a paratheraps. Maybe bifasciatus. But really can't tell you without a pic.

carpintis are often labeled as the "Pearl Cichlid".
Geophagus and green terror are also called pearl..
