Hi guys can anyone give some suggestions?

I currently have a 150 x 70 x 80cm 180 gallon (uk) setup with the following fish

Herichthys Pearsei (female) 7"
Parachromis Managuensis Jaguar (female) 8"
Cichlasoma urophthalmus Mayan (male) 5"
Archocentrus Octofasciatus JD (male) 5"
Amphilophus citrinellus Barred Midas (male) 5"
pair of Convicts Archocentrus nigrofasciatus, 2" female 3.5" male (wont spawn!!!)
pair of Blue Eyed Cryptoheros Cutteri 2"female 4" male
2 Synodontis catfish both approx 6"

This tank has been setup since Oct 2007 and most of the fish have grown up as juvies together including the Jag and Pearsei. There has been very little aggression within the tank as I have a few peces of bogwood and rocks for the fish to establish territory. Water currently at 78 C and a ph of 7.6. with 30% water changes weekly. The only aggression until recently was minimal gill flaring between the Midas and Mayan and I have newer seen them lock jaws, both the Synodontis sometimes take a beating but only when feeding around someones home turf.

For the last couple of days my Pearsei has suddenly decided to beat the living crap out of my Jag. Constantly pursuing the Jag when she comes out into open water, forcing her into hiding in her cave. I looked closely at the Pearsei's behaviour she isn't just defending her territory as she allows the other fish to wander in and out, she will purposefully swim to the other end of the tank to bully the Jag.

Is this normal behaviour? Is the Pearsei targetting the Jag as a potential predator due to the Jags more streamline shape? My Mayan is a also more streamlined than the other cichlids but she is happy with him invadinbg her space. I thought the Jag was supposed to be the aggressive one and was concerened with potential future problems regarding her.

Both are really lovely fish and both have really good characters I'm concerend that I'm going to have to give one up! Help!!

The tank maybe getting to small for that amount of fish(foot print wise) or the Pearsei may just see the Jag as a potential threat if she is looking to maybe lay eggs?.If the Jag is not really getting damaged, I would let it go for a while and see if it settles down.Maybe rearrange the tank. What are your Nitrate levels before water change?I would have thought you would need a bit more than 30% w/c a week with that stock?

Thanks for the reply

Tried the usual trick of changing the decor around, bit of chaos for about an hour then all the other fish settled down. Pearsei still pissed with the Jag though

Nitrate avg 12ppm, currently running a Beltec Nitrate Filter plus Fluval FX5 with added zeolite also running a 1000/lt/hr internal Hailea Bio-Filter to polish the water . When changing the water I always make sure that the gravel is cleaned and disturbed making sure there is no build of of gas pockets.

Thgis is te first pearsei that I've ever owned, and up until recently it's been a peaceful tankmate. Just curious if anybody else had any experience with this type of aggression from this species?

I don't think the Pearsei is egg laying. There are no signs of nest building and no suitable mate within the tank.

Anyone got personal experiences of aggression in this species? thanks

Don't have any experience with Pearsei but I'd defianitely keep it if one has to go.

I have one but I find them pretty peaceful. He is the lowest on the rung in my comm tank.Even the Front under half his size will push him away.

I'm really surprised that the Pearsi is picking on the Jag. I'm betting to say the Pearsi is trying to show dominance over the Jag now because later the Jag will surely show aggression over the Pearsi. I have 2 and they are both very mellow but then again they are in a pretty mellow tank with no other really aggressive natured fish. I would keep an eye on them to see if the Jag quickly turns the tables on the Pearsi which i think will happen eventually.
