I'm having a heck of a time deciding between these. I was hoping to put a pair in a 180. I was set on pearsei but the syn/bifa have amazing colors.

I've had a syn way back, but I haven't owned the others. I'm looking for a big personable vieja type. Which would you do for a living room display?

Synspilum, one is for sale near me but dont have a tank big enough for an adult.
I just think they are a great looking fish.
But the pearsei also look pretty good.
My vote is synspilum

Syn or bifa gets my vote. Between the two depends on where or who you're buying from. If you're lucky enough to find locally, buy ones with most potential (obviously).

But if you're buying online, and I've stated this on my other thread, cota has bifa Rio Chacamax that's amazing at 2.5". I know since I purchased a few. Since you're trying to get a pair only, buy the larger 4.5-5.5" size, I'm sure they're even more amazing.

Of the three species-
I currently have a pair of bifasciata with a million fry- Rio Grijalva- so not as yellow
4 melanura Lago peten- synspila is a jr synonym of Melanura
Single black belt
Previously had a single Pearsei and single synspila

What I currently have I like the color of the melanura best
Personality wise Pearsei was the friendliest always at the glass to say hi-
I would love to keep a pair of these in the future

This is a Rio Grivalja Bifaciata I got from Jeff Rapps (F1). Colorful beast and was awesome to look at. God help you if you had to move him. I would have to take 95 % of the water out and almost lay him on his side. Typical Vieja skidish when scooping and would hurt himself to get away or jump out.

That's a beautiful fish. How personable is it? This was the other catch location I liked but couldn't remember the name

Vasquez how old is that fish, it’s incredible my wild pair isn’t quite as large at colorful but I’m hoping over time it will get there-

Too make matters worse look into bocourti.

I think the syns and bifa are better looking than pearsei ive never had those two specific fish but have had other vieja. Personality wise they dont compare to the pearsei. To be fair ive only kept zonatus, heterospilus, and argentea.

The pearsei and het are probably the last cichlids i'll own.
