Does anyone have exact ingredient amounts for peat filtering? How much peat (in oz. measuring cup) does it take to lower 100 gallons of water (or any other amount) by .2 pH? How many days would it take? How much would this amount lower my KH and GH?

I'm running an experiment now using 4oz peat (measuring cup) in a 5g bucket, but i'm not sure if this is even close to realistic.

I don't have exact numbers. But I did do a lot of trial and error attempts a few years back. It seems that to make a significant change to pH in my area using peat is very, very difficult. I had to turn the water almost black with tannins to get it to budge. My KH here is very high, though, and this has a major buffering effect. What's your source water KH?

:iagree: water hardness is an important factor in peat filtration.

Bottom line: What you're doing is the only way: Trail & Error (and hopefully success)

Please post results when you've got a hang of it!!!

My tap water is not too bad. KH = 120, GH = 150, pH = 7.2

I can't find any thing on the Net that gives any details about exact measurements. Could it be that I'll be the first (lol!). What I want to solve is How much peat will reduce pH and GH/KH in a given time period (say 1 week)?

(But you have a good point - it may depend on what water I'm starting out with).

I'll get back to you folks once I have the answer!
