I would like to lower down my pH in an attempt to breed my fishes, and I heard peat moss is the way to go. So I went and purchased eheim Torf. I placed it in the bottom media tray of my FX5.

However, I have carbon in the 2nd tray to remove odour from hikari sinking pellet.

Would carbon affect the efficiency of peat moss? Because I heard carbon could adsorb tannin and eheim Torf is basically tannin. I hope this won't be much of a problem since the carbon is in the 2nd tray and torf is in the 3rd tray which means the tannin leeched would have to cycle around my tank before contacting the carbon.

Bump for an answer to this question!

I have the same question.

yes, the carbon will remove tannins. the best way to lower your ph is to mix your tap water with RO. what are you trying to breed? what is your current ph? is it stable? many fish will spawn in a higher ph. don't forget that a water change will also get rid of tannins, so you will have to add again. chasing your ph is not what you want to do.

 whats the KH and PH values of the tank currently your trying to lower with peat? True many fish will spawn in hard water, however I have had a higher hatching rate with lower a GH and TDS level (used RO) Ph has never been a factor though as long as it is stable. if you use peat ensure your replacement water is similar in values.

I don't use carbon and yes massivore or NLS products make an unusual smell in the fish room.. :irked:

BTW I hope you have the peat in a bag in your FX5..plus in a bag or loose peat clogs up a canister filter rapidly
