I have started putting peat in my tank and was curious for some feedback. Ultimately, what I care about is having tannins in the water that will make it softer but also help to fight disease like HITH. My tank is a 180g and I do a 50% water change every 5-7 days. I have putting in 1 large cup (10 table spoons) of peat into a filter sock that I hang in my tank and replace it about once every 3 weeks or so.

My question is, do I need to replace it more often or leave it longer? The large water changes I do remove a lot of the color tint over the 3 week period. I don't really care if the color stays or goes, more about whether the tannins continue to be released over the 3 weeks even though the color is gone. I will replace the peat weekly if I need to but it seems like folks replace only once a month.

I use a dress sock, and fill it FULL of peat, probably 8 cups worth for my 125, I change that every 3 weeks. I'd either add more peat or change it more frequently in your case. I lose a ton of color during my water changes

I guess the question is do the tannins continue after colorloss?

This is new so I am still pretty much testing the hardness of my water to make sure it does not drop too much to cause PH stability issue. I can't believe you are doing 8 cups. That sounds like a ton!
