Hello everyone I had a question about my first Geophagus ever. My LFS always is amazing with there selection. They have had a lot of geos recently and I've never been into them all that much but with a selection that includes balzini, jurupari, surinamesis, altifrons, winemilleri , brasliensis, steindachneri and pellegrini plus a one or two more I can't remember it is kind of hard not be interested. They are all relatively cheap with only the 30$ winemilleri being more than 18$. Now I went ahead and bought the 1.5 inch pellegrini and I couldn't be happier but alas I have some questions. Is it more agressive than typical geos like the store owner says? Is it bad idea to throw in a planted tank with Gertrude rainbows as the smallest fish? Is this a true pellegrini and if so is it worth it to grab the other two for 10$? Also is a 18$ 2inch Balzini a deal?

Your pellegrini is steindachneri....ok price for steindachneri

Thanks for the heads up. He is rarely wrong with the species but it does happen. I read a post from 2010 about nobody being able to get true pellegrini. I thought in five years things may have changed, guess I was wrong. What's the clear indicater between the two?

^ If he's selling fish as G. surinamensis, those are are almost definitely mislabeled as well. Also, balzanii are Gymnogeophagus and jurupari are Satanoperca.

Ryan's right. Satanoperca and Gymnogeophagus are always mislabled as geophagus. I once saw some geo red head tapajos labled as "Balzanii Eartheaters" so do your homework.

Steindachneri are also great looking fish. Well worth the price your paying. Very aggressive. Males are pretty intolerant of other males... grab a few more and be prepared to remove the less dominant males once the killing starts. The rainbows should be fine.
