I have a buttikoferi that is approximately 11" in length. I am currently tryin to switch his diet over to pellets. When I feed him the pellets he repeatedly bites them and spits them out. It Almost looks like he has a hard time chewing the hard food. I have hikari cichlid staple medium floating pellets and new life spectrum jumbo fish formula 6mm sinking pellets. I was wondering if these mAy be too large or hard for him to eat.should i try a smaller size or softer food or will he just slowly adjust to eatin pellets? Any advice would be great.
Thanks,
Omni

Well I take it nobody believes these pellets are too small or hard for him then. I was just surprised to see him nibbling them instead of just inhaling them whole.

I have a 4 inch butti that eats med pellets so if he can so can yours. Probably just doesn't prefer them over what he was use to.

i raised mine on small pellets, then med pellets, now they eat the large ones without issues at all, but i do feed them a variety of foods, they eat live crickets, rosies occasionally, pellets, flakes, frozen brine shrimp, blood worms, and they love shrimp pellets try those they are easy to breakdown i bet they go for them

My Butti is only 6" maybe and he eats the large Hikari pellets no problem. At first he would prefer flake. He doesn't seem to want to eat other fish. I think u just have to starve him out. Keep offering the same thing and eventually he will eat it. Also u could try soaking them in a shot glass of tank water and then pouring them in to soften them up.

the way i get my fish to eat pellets for the first time is stop feeding for 3 days then when they are just starving ill throw a couple of pellets usually the others that are use to pellets will get them before the new fish...then i throw more pellets...mokey see monkey do

just stick at it and he will eat the pellets, i got a pair of istlanum cichlids that refused NLS pellets, the female would chew and then spit them out and the wouldn't even look at them, the female gave in and started eating them after about 5 days but the male didn't eat until 10 days.

Soak the pellets in blood worms. If you can get live worms this works best. But letting the worms defrost and soften up the pellets. Always worked for me. Careful not to soak them for too long or you'll have a huge mess in your tank when you pour them in.
