Pellets for buttikoferi

I have a buttikoferi that is approximately 11" in length. I am currently tryin to switch his diet over to pellets. When I feed him the pellets he repeatedly bites them and spits them out. It Almost looks like he has a hard time chewing the hard food. I have hikari cichlid staple medium floating pellets and new life spectrum jumbo fish formula 6mm sinking pellets. I was wondering if these mAy be too large or hard for him to eat.should i try a smaller size or softer food or will he just slowly adjust to eatin pellets? Any advice would be great.

You could try soaking them in tank water for a moment or two, they also like thawed peas.
In nature they are known to eat hippo dung.

Ya the fish was eating peas before. I'm trying to switch to pellets for easier portioning and hopefully more balanced diet.

Ya peas are what I was originally feeding the fish. I'm trying to switch to pellets because I feel like it will be a more balanced diet and will be easier to feed the right Amount.
