you have already out yourself out there by making this thread. This thread has members of the DEC and im pretty sure is the DEC keeps tabs on this sight for leads. This thread could mean that your just curious about the subject or your already keeping them in your tanks. TYhis thread already gives them cause to contact or search your house

alright i thougght i already posted this but,, youll never get caught keeping p's unless u invite the epa into your house and tell them u have piranhas that u plan to dump into rivers. keeping ps "illegally" is a victom less crime especially in new york sense they cant live through the winter if introduced to the wild, so most cops wouldnt care i dout any epa adjents would care unless they needed to make quotas or something. aslong as your not selling them than there is no punishment and probly 90% of the police in ny dont even know that keeping p's is even illegal

Not sure where you get all that from as i have many friends who are cops and im sure they would call bs on your post. If caught you could face fine probly around $500 or more a fish, jail time. Thats just for keeping them and the penalty witll only go up if caught selling or releasing them. You can ibatain a permit to keep them in NYS but its very hard to get one unless your keeping them for scientific reasons...

Does anyone know the penalty for having these fish

Are they in fact illegal in your state?....I just took a look at Oddball's state by state run down of what's restricted and there were no pirahna listed for NY.
