I transferred my green terror to the 75 gallon aquarium I setup last week. I also transferred the old filter, so I wouldn't have to cycle it. However, it is a Penguin 200, and it doesn't fit over the larger rim very far, so the water flowing out of it falls a lot farther than it used to. I can't raise the water level in the tank, either, because of the sump. (adding water just increases the water level in the sump)

Is there anything I can add that will smooth out the flow? How long should I leave the filter running before I take it off? (I already have a fluval 404 and the sump running)

First of all, the fluval and the sump arent cycled right? I would run the penguin for about a month. Im assuming you have the carbon cartridge and just the rotating drum and nothing in the extra media container in the penguin? Just so you know, when you take it off, expect a possible ammonia spike no matter what, and almost definetly some short-term nitrites. There is only so much waste in your tank, and the bio-load will spread across the surface area of all the filters, so when you take off the penguin the other filters will still need to cycle some, as they will not be able to be totally efficient just because of the presence of the penguin. It shouldnt be too bad though as long as you wait long enough, and I wouldnt worry too much about a short-lived spike. Just test often and do water changes when needed. As far as the problem youre asking about, can you somehow raise the intake for the sump so that you could raise the water level in the tank? If you raise the intake some you could then fill the tank more without just raising the water level in the sump. Thats all I could think of as a solution. I dont think having the water cascade out far is a problem though, maybe there will be a bit more evaporation, but Im not even sure about that.

Can you just put the Penguin cartridge and Bio-wheel in your sump, where the overflow runs down into the sump?
This way you seed the sump and keep all the bio on the Penguin media in your system.

Burt:)

y9ou just let the bio wheel float arround the sump
