hey guys, i have a 100g tank right now with 2 penguin 200 on it but looking to upgrade one. found a brand new penguin 350 for cheap and an used but good conidtion ac110 for around the same price. which would be a better buy and filteration for my 100g?

penguin 200 + penguin 350?
penguin 200 + ac110?

thanks,
kenny

AC110 all the way.

I personally prefer the Aqua Clear Filters over any other brand HOB...

Also, the AC110 is a '500 gph' filter as opposed to a '350 gph' filter... Wile flow rate isn't everything, it does matter...

When both are the same price, I would say a used AC110 beats a used Pen 350 any day...

havent used ac but penguins suck(opinion based on the two i owned)

thanks guys. i think i will go with the ac. oh btw the pen is NEW and 10 dollars cheaper and the ac is USED

I just put 2 penguin 350 into service on a 55. I paid, including shipping, $78 for the pair. Pretty decent price I think, for around 700gph of filtration.
I got these to replace a pair of canisters whose care was really dragging my enjoyment of the tank down.
The penguins were chosen for their easy maintenance and the bio wheel system. I like the way they took the energy from the filtered water, coming out the spillway to drive the wheels, very clever.
All other systems let this available, free energy go to waste.
For media I use scour pads, the same 6X9 pads I used to cut down for use in the canisters, and they do the same excellent job. The ease of maintaining the media, well I am still grinning.
A HOB will never be as quiet as a canister, period, end of story…
Noise levels on a (key words coming up) well maintained HOB system can be held to acceptable levels. A HOB can only make noise from two areas, the impeller or the spillway.
Other than a design or manufacturing error the impeller can run with no more than a hum.
It can rattle and bang like a can full of marbles if neglected or contaminated, as well.
The noise from the spillway is tank water level controlled.
Been running them for a couple of weeks now and am quite please with how they are cleaning both water column and sand.
Not saying anything against the AC filters, was just saying the penguin system works for me.

Do some research on here with the search function. So that you can make a educated decision.

There are some quirky things about the AC110 filters that make them unuseable to some people. I thought I was alone in noticeing this about the AC filters. But after several PM's to me about a recent thread on cleaning them I now know alot of people feel the same way as I do.

If you are able to get past these things and still be pleased with AC's materials and design. Then you will be very happy with the AC110. It does move alot of water.

If the things you find do bother you, then get the 350. As they are a excellent filter. Just a different design and less powerful.

PS-- I hope the AC clan don't put a hit out on me. I tried very hard to be nice this time while still being truthful. Considering you all now how I feel. :)
