Penguin Bio-Wheel Power Filters cheap

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've used the Penguin Bio-Wheels in the past. I really liked them for the money, although they certainly aren't going to be top of the line filters. Bio Wheels are a big addition to a normally bland filter. I used my Penguins with a bio filter material in the basket and typically reused the actual slide in filters and rinse out the junk.

Great concept in theory, but in practice, the wheels don't turn 100% of the time, and generally don't do what they are supposed to. That's not saying I don't use them on most of my tanks!

I couldn't have said it any better. I have several, love 'em. But yeah, it's disappointing to have to try to get the wheels spinning again almost daily. They claim you never have to replace the biowheel, but I am going to. It seems like they get loaded up over time and become "water logged".

They work pretty well. I have 6 of them assorted sizes. I prefer ac filters though.

As far as HOBs go, that's what I've always used... but I'm converting all my filters to canisters because they're quieter, more efficient, and do a better job at chemical filtration, IMO. But... if I were to buy an HOB, I'd get the Penguin.

got rid of mine when I switched to canisters ... I still use HOBs on my smaller tanks, but I use ACs, not Penguins ... too noisy, and I don't like cartridges ...
