This filter is driving me nuts, between the kitty meowing my 4 year old playingand the dogs barking im gonna flip:nilly: Its on my 55g cichlid tank and i use sand as substrate. Play sand to e exact and i guess some of it is in the gears or something cause the fitler spends all day making the horrible grinding noise, like if theres something grinding with the propeler. Ive taken it apart and clean it out really well in every crevice i can find and still maks the noise. anyone have this problem before? what could it be?

its a penguin 200

bump. its getting worst and driving me nuts!!!

Garbage ...do yourself a favour and buy an Eheim Aquaball powerhead. It is fit with a venturi and all you have to do is to make sure the top goes above the water surface. Besides the water movement you get free air source as well. Very good, silent.

If you're into air pumps check www.kensfish.com

he's talking about his filter, he doesnt need a powerhead.

the same thing happened to my penguin 200, i got sand in it and thought i smoked the impeller. i went for months with it making this aweful grinding noise till just yesterday i noticed the white bushing that holds the actual blue prop part starting to slide up, causing the prop to be able to move up away from the magnet and shake around ,causing the noise. maybe your is ruined, but i was able to fix my situation by shoving the white bushing back down. just inspect the whole impeller for wear or improper movement.

sorry my female fishy loving friend:D

ok-
1.take the impeller out the filter
2.inspect for anything abnormal
3. grab the magnet and the prop and see if you can move them away from each other GENTLY or wiggle the prop GENTLY, any abnormal movement can cause grinding
4. check the magnet for rust, sometimes the sand will score the magnet and cause rust deposits.
5. reclean every little nook and cranny in the impeller area for any remaining sand.
6. tell us what you find.

lol i shall go inpsect it, ive looked before and only thin i notice is that something bobbles up and down that im not sure is suppose to.

I despise the Penguin 200's and 350's. The noisiest most worthless filters money can buy lol. I've got 7 350's thrown in my storage closet. I'd gotten all at the same time less than a year ago. The Emperor 400's are a bit better but that said I'll still never buy any other HOB besides an AquaClear 110 for a 55 g or bigger tank.

yes i tried. I think its time to go AC. this is the last tank left on biowheel filters. everything else is on Aqua clears and for good reason i see.
