Penguin vs. Emperor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
no. I would get the Penguin 350 instead reason being you won't have clogged spraybars and you can rinse and reuse the catridges alot more than the Emperor cartridges.I had both and the Emperors are long gone.

Agree,
The Emp uses a slightly larger filter cartridge, but not that you would notice any increase in filtration performance.
Neither has any advantage in workmanship, manufacturing method, or materials used.
I think it pretty clever to use the return flow to drive the wheels over a spray bar arrangement.
Downside…
Man, I wish they would use better material for the impeller shaft.
Additional problem is not being able to get just a replacement shaft.
Should the shaft get scored up you have to buy the whole impeller assembly.
Would like the option of paying a bit more for a ceramic shaft.
Big plus is the customer support.
Marineland is very good at dealing with any complaints you might have.

i prefer the 400's to me cleaning the spray bars every few months is just part of tank maintance. its easy to clean them and not much of a con against them.

If you are in the market for a new HOB....I suggest AC....cant go wrong with those! I love mine!

+1

But I have found the larger ACs are better than the small models...

I love how easy it is to switch out media, and you can use whatever media you want, and they last forever.

Definitively the 400. I have 4 of them right now. Love the spray bars. I have one 350. Nothing wrong with it, but like other penguins, the wheels can stop turning. You never have to worry about this with a 400.

As for AC, if you don't have to get one, i wouldn't.

But search the forum, this has come up many times now and people will have different options...

I prefer my 400s over my 350s. More gph, more robust impeller than the 350 (although as Kaiser said, it isn't the best design or best material for either of them), comes with the clamshells instead of needing to buy them separately, has the spraybars, bigger bio-wheels.

I'd say it's worth about an extra $15 to me, so figure out what kind of deal you're getting on either one and see if it's worth it dollar-wise to you.
