so i went and bought an emporer this weekend. whats the diference between that and penguin?

flow rate thats about it i think
same makers

Emporers have spray bars. Pengs dont.

Emperor is a much more reliable filter. I have both and the Penguin I have had to change the impellers alot. Will only buy Emperor from now on.

i have both. The main differences are the flow rates and with the emperor you can adjust the flow rate from full on to full off.

AFAIK the new emps don't allow flow rate adjustment, my old ones do, the new ones I bought three months ago removed it. I prefer not having it, as I always managed to close it and starve the filter of water.

Aside from the impeller deal mentioned, the only real plus is the spray bar. Which keeps the biowheel spinning and exposed to untreated water even if the mechanical media gets clogged. In the penguin the water spills back into the tank near the intake tube, leaving the biowheel high and dry, and causing an ammonia spike. Also, the penguins seem to drop in flow rate quicker from clogging and buildup of crud inside the intake tube/impeller area, making it less forgiving if you neglect to scrub it out monthly.

I like both :) But own 2 emp 400's and Penguin 350's :) But have used one adn wasn't displeased...

IMO, the Emperors are better than Penguin filters because of the higher flow rates, larger bio-wheel, and spray bars. A lot of people have problems with the bio-wheel stopping on the Penguin, but with the spray bars, that usually doesn't happen w/ the Emperors.

thats pretty much what i thought. the emporer is the more finished of the two. also mine says it is adjustable but it aint.

Good info boys! I was under the Spray Bar impression. Either way I have 6 Emps, but have since switched to AC110's

but my Emps are running strong. I have a smaller penguin, but as MilitantPotato stated very well, clogging can lead to some serious issues, when you do not have the spray bar!

IMHO......
