Hello guys.

I currently don't own any rays, but plan on building an 8 foot by 4 foot tank when i have the space in a house. Recently I've told a few people about this dream, and they feel that tank is far too small to keep rays in, and its unfair on the rays (although they dont know much about fish in general, so their opinion is theirs and that's fine.)

I was just wondering, for those of you that do own stingrays, does anyone ever think its cruel to keep them in a tank? i figure if they are happy to breed etc they must be happy?

All opinions and comments that you have ever received about your rays are welcome.

your tank size sounds great for them. maybe they are thinking saltwater giants lol. i think their opinions will change after they see a ray in your tank as they will be mesmerized by them and also with the size of your tank it will look plenty big enough.

agreed with jeffers. i think the majority of ppl do not have a clue that there are freshwater stingrays so they automatically think of the giants in the ocean. honestly, that tank is my dream tank also (8x4x3 to be exact) and would be perfect for some leo's

As a Professional Firefighter-Paramedic I am constantly amused by the fact that the "Man's Men" that I work with are creeped out by the rays I keep. We are a tight bunch and we are constantly at each others homes. They have seen my collection of rays numerous times and not a singe one of them is manly "rational" enough to touch the rays. I have two rays in particular that have been hand fed since birth. Very docile, very accustomed to people yet these "Bravest of the Brave" say "EEwww, no way!" It is really entertaining.
They think I am #$%^ing crazy to keep and breed rays.

Most people are just shocked that freshwater rays exist let alone are able to be bred in captivity. Many just stare, slack-jawed at the pools in my home.

Again, very entertaining.
Respectfully,
FireMedic.

Agree with many of the statements above. That tank size is perfect for some of the Freshwater ray species and there are some saltwater ones out there that stay small as well. Most people hear the word ray or stingray and automatically assume that you are talking about the ones you see in public aquaria such as cow nose rays, southern rays and eagle rays. Some species stay as small as 1 foot.

You will have a very nice set up for a group of rays and I am sure your friends will adjust there thought process when they learn more about them.

Take Care and Good Luck

The reactions of all my friends to my rays is you sad b*****d lol, they think i could put my money to good use. In any case it isnt true as the rays dont stop me doing anything else they do just means i have an actual interest besides video games.
