I get the impression many think peppering is not a desired trait. if not, then I have 4 out of 15 which are peppered, the light orangy colored pigeon blood, red pigeon blood, blue pidgeon blood & marboro red.

anyone know why some show peppering?

but I guess I have to accept them as they are since they are part of my big family now. I still like them a lot but hope this is not a bad trait.

thks all

i was told that a dark background causes peppering and stress can bring out peppering, their pigeons though so no matter what they'll have some peppering

yep dark back grounds, and dark substrate can bring out peppering. it's not a bad trait for the fish to have. it just like a person with frackles.

I am using the coral sea background plastic roll. so I guess a little dark but my lights are bright. is it permanent? think if I flipped to the brighter all blue background side it would go away or at least diminish?

but why only my orangy pigeons & not the others?

I was hoping someone would say it's ok, I thought the same, just like freckles!

thks again!

Peppering is like the bars on other discus. It's unique to pigeon based fish, and a result of a mutated gene. Fish that are not pigeon blood based will not have peppering.

:iagree:

Isnt a marb red a strain of pigeon? I know that directly after a wc my pigeons look there best, peppering gone and after about a half hour it returns just a little bit. Some pigeons will have the entire gene bred out while others will still have it. Hans told me it may get better as the fish mature. I was using the dark blue plastic back ground and switched to a light blue back ground and it didnt help. I hate the color I chose. I also use silica sand or pool filter sand.
