in front of my cichla tank,IL
how big of a tank would i need for a few perch that would be around 2-3inches? what temp would i need to keep that tank. also would a lfs be able to order some for me because i remeber i was talking to the the guy at the lfs and hes said he could get muskies.

Do you plan to keep them in this tank for life? If so, a 40 breeder is bare minimum. A 75 gallon would work well. Room temp should be fine.

*EDIT* Just making sure- are you talking about yellow perch, Perca flavescens? Some people apply the word "perch" to a lot of fish that ain't perch.

yeah yellow perch. I might be picking up a 72gallon bowfront but was thinking about making it a planted dat tank but my 210gallon might be free if someone buys my peacockbass. and i am gonna be moving the 210 to the basement once the basement is finished. What pther fish would i be able to keep with the yellow perch also the reason why i want to have yellow perch is because i was ice fishing and i caught alot of them and like how they look.

Mid-sized centrarchids such as crappie, rock bass, etc. should be OK. Bluegill and other Lepomis sunfish species tend to be territorial, so if you include them you will need lots of structure (driftwood, rock piles, etc.) to allow peaceful coexistence. Other choices include bullheads, large minnows (golden, common or striped shiners, creek chub or river chub, etc.), smaller suckers (chubsuckers, white suckers), and large goldfish.

A 210 native setup with perch as the focus would be very nice!

I think they would eventually need something 6'X2' or larger, ideally. They aren't particularly active, but can grow into the 14-16" range eventually.

I don't know about a store being able to order them, but you could see if you could find a local hatchery that does small orders. At the place I used to work, you could pick up a couple in the 2-4" range for a few bucks.

A 16" yellow perch? monster!
At the hatchery where I worked, we raised a couple in some 135 gallon displays with a pretty much unlimited supply of minnows and had a couple pass 14 or 15". I've heard 16" is about their max size.

thanks so how is the growth rate on perch?
and what is the warmest temp they can tolerate?
one last question does anyone know of a hachery closet to the south burbs of chicago?

Why do you want to buy them? Just go catch a few. I would recomend a 6' tank for them, they can live in a 4', but it would bcom very cramped. What temperature is your basment? Is it temperature controlled? IF it is, nontemperature controlled would work fine for the tank, as long as the tmperature doesn't get above 65 or so for any length of time.
You'll find that they are good aquarium fish, they'll eat just about anything, and are very pretty. You don't have to kep them in a school, so a smallr number is feasible. They mostly stay on the bottom, so midwater fish like some of th largr shiners or lepomis would work vry well.

Ive seen yellow perch over 18 inchs. I currently have a 5 inch perch he is almost two years old. Not a very active fish. They can be hard to pellet train if its wild as mine is. As noto said a 40 breeder will be fine but a 75 would be better. There is no need to Have a 2ft wide tank for a perch, Unless you are keeping a large group or with other large species. In general they are slow growing. They fastest growth can be obtained by feed them feeders and market shrimp. They dont do very well with other species that get to the food first such as rock bass, but crappie would do fine. As for temp they do not need a chiller around 70 is fine. There max temp would most likly be upper 80s.
