I need some advice, fellow cichlidholics.

I have a now 7.5" Jaguar that I've raised since fry. He was very aggressive to his tank mates, obviously, so I gave him basically his own tank with some very passive fish (the 100gal in my tank, excluding the JD as she was in hospital.)

After I took the main competition out, he seemed to almost get depressed. He sat under his log and ate maybe 1/5th of what he used to eat. I finally said **** it and put him in the 20g hospital yesterday. When I put him in I noticed some almost flaking on his scales. Seemed almost like the scales were falling off.

He's recovering in the tank, though I still don't know what's wrong with him.

My perdicament here is what should I do with him? After putting my JD back, she seems to love it. The Jaguar used to always try to basically kill her, now she has no one harassing her. She's active, swimming, and playful with all the other fish. AND she's eating again! She hasn't eaten properly for about six months.

My Jaguar is still lethargic in the 20gal, and my question is should I try to rehome him or give him back to one of the LFS here? My girlfriend bought it for me, so I'm ultimately going to give the choice to her, but I want some opinions. I love this fish, but I don't believe I can house adequetely for it anymore, and it's just not.. I guess the fish for me. It used to be active, but now it's lethargic, lazy, and I never get to see it.

I'm at a loss :(

if it were me, I'd give him back to the LFS . . . although it sounds like he's not in good shape right now, so if possible you might want to wait until his health improves (?)

give him something to chase .. a school of dithers try it before u get rid of him

He was housed with 3x Tinfoil, a xanthic convict, and some plecos.

Do you have a full tank shot? Maybe you could add more hiding spots, caves, territorial boundaries, etc.
Glad to hear that your JD recovered and is eating, BTW.

I've redone the tank since I removed him, so that there were actually less hiding spots. The old one had over ten spots where he dug himself under and would just sit for hours. I got really annoyed by not being able to see my fish so I removed most of them, there's only one or two left that the plecos use.

Thank you for the words about the JD, I am very happy she is eating and swimming actively again.

If I do indeed give him back to the LFS (I actually work at one part time), I'll make sure he's 100% treated and fine before I surrender him.

Bump for more opinions.

but i mean faster smaller fish like danios
