ok before i go any further this is not a pipe dream it's a long term plan. the goonch aint going anywhere unless the fish god have other ideas.

my goonch is currently in a 50G, it will move into either an empty 150G i already have or straight into the empty 260G i have (6ft wide, 2ft high, 3ft long) how ever this will only do until an absolute max of 24" then it's going to need bigger.

the current two options are,

1/ outdoor pond 8'x8'x4' insulated then i'll build a shed/green house type building around it, issues with this is water temp dropping to low in winter (could use heater to keep it up) also trying to get the flow right and viewing. but cost would be lower. would have to build this as a koi/ sturgeon set up in regards to filtration.

2/ a lot more complicated and expensive but use a steel stand to support a 8'x8'x3' acrylic tank, the tank would be viewable from two sides, again in a shed/ green house set up outside but would be able to control the air temp in the building and therefore control the winter drop better. for this i would look at a 4'x8'x2 sump type system, so the flow would be similar to a river effect in large scale. cost on this would be mental but i could build institute and buy it all a sheet at a time.

so what do you guys think to these two idea, which would you go with??

or is there another option i'm not seeing

You from the UK, I have seen pre made ponds with viewing glass for sale on ebay

cheers mate it is an option but still limits the viewing and these are far from active fish lol

If you're budget can stretch to it I would go for a concrete tank built on a slab with a shed built around it, should be able to keep the temp in winter

this would be the idea if i went with the pond, but i would have to look at some sort of viewing windows i dont think the goonch is going to look that impressive from the top

Look into some fiberglass tanks with viewing windows. Several threads recently, one in General Aquaria that has lots of info. Those were US folks though but you can look for similar options in the UK. Below is the link. Make sure you go close to the end where they have a link to the original distributor in asia and you will see some massive tanks.

the problem with these are the larger you need to go the less viewing you get. the goonch isnt very active and spends a lot of its time sat undercover on the bottom in the flow, with that in mind i something with a small viewing window i would hardly ever see it.

i need to do more investigating and see if there are any with larger windows out there.
