Alright so i have pm-ed a couple people who told me to and yet to get a response from one. Heres whats up, i want a full description on the perfect set-up for a sting ray. I mean everything like what water conditioners to use, decorations and what bottom material will work best for the tank, filtration system, what to watch out for in my pups, what are good tank mates other than aros, and any other helpful info you guys have.
I know ill need atleast a 300g so i dont need tank sizes.
and if you could recommend what types of stingrays i should get that would be great also. I have owned a motoro before and leos are also something mainstream. I'm looking to discover new kinds of rays if that makes sense to any of you. Again, other than cichlids, im a noob to the game. help me out.

Not much of a ray guy per se more of a Pbass guy ..But with any sensative fish they neevery clean water ....My way has been with relatively high turnover rate but yet not Blowing the fish out of the water with jetstream returns my big tank tunover rate is pretty much 100 gallons per minute ...I also like several diferent types of filtration and media at the same time that's just me tho i run two 75 gal drip sumps a tub with socks and 50 pounds of ceramics with bamboo to help with nitrats and a 100 gal Bio reactor big time over kill some guys would say but to much never hurts:naughty:;)should not say not much of a ray guy because i am really into them .....just don't have any....

Perfect setup = BIG TANK.

Why ? room and more water. Rays produces a LOT of bioload, they have high metabolism and constantly eating.

The higher the water volume that you have, the less likely that your water will be "polluted" with the waste.

On my 540, I drip 150 gallon of freshwater per day. I have fed one ray with some fat canadian nightcrawlers one at a time, I had to stop at 40 :)

Rays just like other fish don't care for substrate or decor, it's all up to you. My rays can careless about me, they just come up when I get close because they know they're getting food :)

Like said befor Get your hands on the biggest tank you can... at least a three hundred and many will argue larger. And also like mentioned earlier get your hands on as much filtration as possible.
Good tank mates are anything they cant fit in there mouth, if you are a cichlid guy you can look into some of the robust south americans like severums, Geo's, Cichla. I actually keep mine with Frontosa even though some may frown on mixing these types of fish. I find this combo to work really well. As far as some of the more aggressive American species go, I have seen them work out with mixed results. Sometimes the cichlids will be to rough with the rays. Some of it will be trial and error but if you follow the basic guidlines posted so far you should be fine. Big tank, Big filtration and clean water and your ray should stay healthy.... oh yea and lots of food =)

hulon - you posted on my other thread...always some helpful info. Your tank is sick but again i am a noob compared to half the people on this site so ill prolly have to google half the stuff you said.

flame - i know what you mean. I refer to my oscar as a dog with gills but i know he doesnt care about me, just the food that i give him

what my ideal set up would be a 250g with a red aro and a black aro and two rays. Sand bottom with either a 3d background or some driftwood but i realise with rays the more swimming room the better. From what i have gathered though a 300+g is what is necessary and that may have to be the way i go. I just need to take the next three months to research what exactly i will need to accomidate the animals i wish to keep so any and all info even down to the basics is helpful. Anything over a 125g is new to me so again let me stress that i am a noob to rays. The last thing i want to do is harm or worse kill anything let alone a stingray.

I'm in your boat. Just starting to gravitate towards getting one but I've got some overhauling in my tank to do. I'm gonna keep mine in a 210 then probably a stock tank and hopefully find a more suitable acrylic tank at some point. I ordered the aqualog ray book by Ross this week can't wait to get it and read up!

never heard of it. Deff have to look it up and see what it has to offer. Hopefully by the time summer is over ill have enough info to set up the perfect tank.

I am pretty sure that along with strong filtration rays would benefit from a uv sterelizer. I would stick to either fine sand or glass on the bottom of the tank. Having a fully cycled tank is a MUST with rays.

Perfect set up to me is a tank with the largest width you can afford, with good filtration, extra aeration, over and under flow, the right temperature, minimally scrapped with places in the tank with current and still water areas.

What about water changes? I thought about every two weeks 30% is good but ive seen people doing 50% a week on 500g. seems a bit excessive but what do i know
