I assumed male all this time, still think so but maybe I'm wrong. I know the spot in the dorsal points female. This fish doesn't always seem to display it, but more or less has been for a little while.

Male? Female?

Beautiful fish OP. I've been struggling with the same thing w/ my h. Deppii which are very closely related species.
I would go with male because if the head shape. From what I have read, the blotch on the dorsal doesn't always mean female w/ h. Caprintis or deppii.

yea, for starters I'd vote this is more Carpintis-looking, but i'm no expert. The face doesn't look Texas/Rio Grande cichlid to me......2ndly, I also vote male
