Is there any kind of things you should notice about a BGK before you buy him that will help determine his personality. you know how with puppies your supposed to pick the first one that comes to you, are fish the same? I have seen quite a few BGK's at my LFS and some of them are out in the open and happy while there has also been some like my own that were hiding when I looked in the tank. would it have been smarter to get the one in the open or can the hiding be changed?

I've had a few BGK and their personalities are indeed different. I think the safest bet would be to get the ones that do not appear so shy in the store. 9 times out of 10, they will keep that personality...On the other hand, your setup, tank mates, etc. could also effect the personality of the fish.

as of right now he is in a 20 gallon for another week until i'm done with school, then he will be moved into my tank back at home, it has rock caves and hiding places throughout and he will be sharing it with a senegal, rapheal cat, and two cory cats. pretty peaceful tank. i have an amazon sword growing and plan on adding either some fake or real plants.

i mean if a fish is more outgoing in the store then i will most likely retain this in your home but not neccessarily all fish that are shy at the store will remain shy, alot of fish are shy in the store from bad conditions (especially bgk, they are all put in one tank with super bright light and no hidy place) but then come out of their shell in your home aquarium, this has happened ALOT with several fish i have gotten, another trick you could try to get the bgk to come out more is to put some floating plants in the tank to kind of dampen the water or do piece of driftwood to release some tannins into the water (my bgk seems less shy to come out during the day now that he is in my blackwater tank) how long have you had him? mine took at like a week before he would come out with any lights on (this was in my smaller clearwater tank though)

It's always kind of tricky. I know some fish have no choice, but to just swim out in the open since there are stores that don't provide the proper set ups for their fish. I've bought a few fish that seemed that they'd be outgoing at the store, but ended up hiding 90% of the time in my tanks.
