Pest Control dude told me that when I am ready to schedule a cockroaches pest treatment. I was going to need to turn off all pumps. But I have learned, like with craigslist rip offs. THat some ppl dont know the difference between a air pump and a filter/canister filter. My baby festaes do have a air pump and bubble disk along with there 2 canister filters. The pest control guy told me I was going to need to turn everything off and cover the tanks. I understand turning off the air pump to the bubble disk. But do I need to turn off the filters to the tanks also? And how long would be safe for the Festae's? They are only 1.5 inches long and just getting the red color to there fins. The dude told me it would be 30min - 1 hr. depending on what is needed. I can Saran-Wrap the tanks real good. But that will leave no air in the tanks. Right? Id rather buy roach bait then risk losing my favorite F1 Festae;s. I have 20 of them in a 125g tank.

Has anyone had to deal with pest control and there aquariums?

I guess from what I have read we dont have a "infestation" But I do know we have seen 3 of them around the tanks. 2 last night on our black tank stand in the kitchen and one that I saw 3 weeks ago on the tank we have in the back room. Seeing as how my wife is a clean freak. Its good to know that the tanks may be keeping them centralized. I guess because of the warmth, water, humidity. Tonight Im taking out all my light fixtures and placing them in the back yard for one night. On my lunch break I brought home a 8 pack of Large Roach Bait from raid(roach motels). I dont know what we should do. THERE IS NO FOOD LAYING AROUND EVER. I want to call the Exterminator to kill them buggers. But Id rather not risk our other fish and MY FESTAES. PLEASE HELP with sharing ideas or experiences.

Thanks again MFK member.

Is this guy just spraying around or doing some sort of tarp? I cant think of why of they are coming just to spray around the house they would need to do anything with the tanks. Doesnt makes sense, ive always had pest control. Did he say exactly what he would be doing?

Ive always founds these weir bugs bear or under my filters. Like beetles? They are attracted to the filter gunk. Ive always just bought the indoor ortho bug killer you spray like every 3 months. If you dont have a severe infestation it should do the trick. Ive noticed it has the same effect of hiring pest control guy so i just do it myself. :) hope this helps.

Spray, I wouldn't take the chance. I remember as a little kid my parents got the house sprayed for bugs, I at the time, had 1 small goldfish in a 5 gallon hex aquarium. I am almost positive that he died from the spray. But that's just my knowledge, not sure about the treatment you're getting. I tell my parents no to any bug spray just because of all my tanks now.

The last place I called sounded like real ppl. Vs. Reading from a script. And they had the lowest price for what they said was a "general treatment" for our roach issue. They were also honest and told me, "unless you look around and find a bunch of them in a area, you dont sound like you have a infestation" wow $35 each visit and 3 visits recommended in 2 month period. Orkin quoted $135 for first visit and $85 for 1 month later, and $65 every 2 months after that. LOL guess who I'd go with? LOL

The bug tech told me he lays down a residual and a spray inside and outside around the house. He said the stuff they use has a strong high pesticide. So he said a towel or plastic over the tanks and to shut off all pumps. But ppl not into fish. I have noticed they call airpumps filters kr pumps. Which I can understand turninf off. But all but one of our canisters suck water from inside the tank water and it blows the clean filtered water back into the tank from below the water surface. So other then turning off my festaes bubble disk. I really dont want to have them harmed by the pest control dude.

Id rather use the roach motel baits if you thunk that will work. But $35 a visit is hard to beat. They treated our house last year for burrowing termites and they never came back. So I trust there work. But over protective of our fav festae babys.

First termites when we first moved in, then mice in the garage, now roaches. I guess 5 large tanks turnes our az home into a oasis. Hehe :)

We sprayed as a just in case measure when we moved into our new house. We were worried as it sat empty for a while before we bought it. I had fish tanks setup, and didn't have an issue.

I'd probably get a 4ppm plastic sheet (they sell in the big box hardware stores and I've used them for tarps when painting and for a false floor in my basement for moisture proofing.) Cover it all and grab a bunch of fresh carbon and run that non stop after the spraying. I'd just tape the plastic down from the top down to the bottom of the stand. Turning off the pumps will limit the risk a lot. Running the carbon after will remove pesticides. Be prepped to do a water change if you see stress.

It must really drive the neat freak nuts to have to put up with roaches in the house....Try something like Combat bait traps. The roaches are said to carry the poison back to where they hide and eventually kill off the population.
