Pet fish (aka "wet pet")!!!

What cichlid could I keep in a 58 gallon (44x18x18 inches) tank? I just want to keep a single specimen as a pet. What do you think is OK to keep in my tank without being mean to the fish? Is a midas to big? lets hear your opinions!

If you want to keep one single fish I would go with some Crenicichla. They are the closest thing to a pet. Some can tell people apart and let you pet them.

Also guppy posted in the "most intelligent fish" thread that he hade some type of a very smart eel.

Any colour or beauty glooks ordinary after a while but intelligence is always entertaining.

I would do a pair of midas in a 58 gal... I probably wouldn't have any decore in the tank though, maybe a clay pot!!!!

lol , cool that you think that would work If you would write that in an swedish forum, the members would cut you into teeny weeny pieces and feed to their fish!
But swedish cichlid keepers are really fixated at tank sizes...

Well okay....but I think I just keep one fish, I want a pet fish... I already got a trimac breeding pair and a couple of RDs so I really don´t want another pair, just a big fat petfish

I have a large blue dempsey (look at my avatar, it's my fish) and he is adorable. My best fish-pet. He comes and see me when i approach the tank, stares at me for a while. Does not do this with nobody else.

He is now 10", and won't grow bigger. Would be ok in your tank alone.

if u dont care abt looks, get and oscar. if u do, then get a GT.

ive got a foot long jaguar cichlid alone in a 55 and she is beautiful and very entertaining. if she sees me in the room she starts flaring up at me. great pet fish. i dont agree that you will get used to beauty over time, mine just keeps getting better and better looking.
