Petco flowerhorn update

So the male flowerhorn I got failed to fertilize the eggs of a female recently, and then went on to batter the female to the brink of death. I put her in the community tank and left the male to himself... but now his kok is getting very large. Is this a bad sign, can these rupture or cause serious injury?

No actually that is a good signal that the male wants to show his dominance over the female and wants to be as presentable as possible to attract the females attention.

You got him from petco? What a steal lol. Would that be considered a short body? Either way its a nice looking fh

Yeah I think he is a short body. I have had him for about 3 months now... he is about 5-6 inches in length. I was hoping he could coexist with a mate, but because he battered her so badly I think I need to try it slower next time.

He's a stud and a steal for $12 lol. And I'd agree with short body. A males bump will be smaller with a female or with other fish. I've experienced this first hand. Remove the other fish and within a day I noticed a huge difference. He's looking good!

How large to short bodies get? Will he be okay in a 50 gallon tall for life?

What's the tank measure? He should max out around 8-9"

I think it is more than a foot front to back, and it is as tall as my 125. Shorter length than the typical 55 though.

Wow! Very nice pick up from petco for $12. My brother gave me this guy (3") cause he ran out of room which I am not sure how much it costed but I guess I got lucky too. Anyways, he is in a 75gal. and hopefully his head will grow as big as your guy at that size.
