So i went into the local petco because i get bored and like to see if they get any thing exciting in and i came across this

RTCxTiger shovelnose.jpg

I got him for free because some guys kid watched it eat their 4" bala shark and i got to the store a few mins later and the guy ive gotten to know says "hey you want that catfish?" i was like what catfish and i saw him and i was like oh hell yeah. I said how much he said free i said get him. RTCxTSN if im not mistaken. I was waiting to come across an RTC but this guy will do. Ive had him for about a month now and hes shot up from 6" to around 10" so i put him in the pool with the big guys. One of my oscars went right for him but hes doing good and i cant wait for him to become a monster.

Great fish. Be huge in no time

Free now, but tank, and feeding for the adult=$$$

Its all good. I used to have a large RTC and they seem to have more of an appetite. Hes in with some large peacock bass that i would estimate to be around 15" and some large oscars 13"+ and a 16" gar and a 14"+ red belly pacu and a couple large rays so im used to an expensive food bill. I breed and sell fish too so i really dont pay much for food its a self sustaining hobby. Hes in a 1000+ gallon pool so tank was cheap lol. My fish i breed probably paid for that too.

Cool. :) glad to see he went to a good home. My large one would sometimes eat 5 lbs of food per week. Wish I had something to help pay for that lol. I was feeding him shrimp mostly so was roughly $12 per week to feed him. Not too bad as a stand alone fish, got pricey when you added in the bill with the other 10 cats over 2' lol.

Wow 5 lbs a week is crazy. Im going through 2.2 lb bags of massivore every 10-12 days and i thought that was a lot on top of a lb of shrimp every couple days. For my RTC i had 4 tanks of peacocks i bred to feed him(they were cross breeds nobody wanted so i just bred them on a large scale for feeders) and he ate pellets too and just about anything he could find that the other fish didnt get. Ive noticed this hybrid doesnt have the voracious appetite that the RTCs do. Even as babies the RTCs eat a lot more. 10 cats over 2' would be amazing!

I was thinking of doing a convict pond for feeders when my catfish get bigger. Keep them well fed on a high nutrient diet. Hmmm my hybrid had a very voracious appetite that rivaled that of rtc. I would sometimes put large oscars in with him. Every now and then he would eat them. Funny thing is he ate like 3 13" oscars and a 14" jag cichlid, but left a 10" and 11" oscar alone lol. They were in with him like a year untouched. I would also feed him floating pellets, but he could eat several bags in one sitting so no way was that primary. Did shrimp and ocassional hot dogs if I was running low on funds. I didn't like doing the hot dogs though as it would really spike the params quickly and required massive water changes. You can look up my catfish bonanza thread. That was all my old cats I use to have. I have a few approaching the 1' mark currently since I am just getting back into things. :) I really miss my big cats.

I have a similar one. When i first got him, he cleared my my tanks of anything smaller than 3". He was about 8" when i got him.
