So I have worked for my local Petco for about 3 weeks now. I got hired on as an "aquatic specialist". From what I've seen on here franchised pet store are about as worthless as a condom with a hole in it, but this Petco seems to me to be an exception. We do daily water changes, water tests, scrubbings, and treat all of our sick fish in hospital tanks. We even do special orders for customers. When we get their fish in we don't even take it out of the bag we call them and have them pick it up as is so it doesn't acclimate to too many systems and get over stressed. We have our availability lists posted so customers can scan through and fill out an order. All of our tanks are as healthy as could be and I've been bringing in different selections of cichlids and saltwater species. We have 3 display tanks, a reef tank, salt water predator, and planted discus tank. All are in perfect shape, the reef tank has been up and running for over 2 years now. I guess what I am saying is all hope is not lost on "certain" franchised pet stores.

That's sounds pretty awesome. I've worked at a lfs for about two years now and I hate the company I work for. I try to do as much right for the fish as I can but our animal head is a painintheassknowitall and makes things difficult for those of us that actually care about the animals. Closest petco to me is about an hour away :-/.

To some degree, chain stores are controlled by the management in the building. If the Manager feels it worthy to spend time doing things like this, then he flows it down. Others may not care and look at it from a purely financial profit point of view.

It would be interesting to do a cost analysis on proper maintenance and husbandry ideology versus turnover and resale focus.

i.e keeping fish alive to potentiall sell every one, or selling enough to account for the losses that one would have by high sales volumes.

That sounds like a great place unfortunately the majority of the stores around here are the exact opposite
