If you have the rope fish already cured with borax or your method baking soda,i would suggest paint. When using the original specimen the texture of the fish will show up through a light coat of paint. It would be good for you to find some kind of reference material like a picture of a rope fish and try to match the colours and patterns. this is ushually done with an air gun but if you mix your paint thin you might be able to do it with a brush.
