The Land where Fish Rule!
Hey Guys, just adopted these fish from a local Petsmart! They are out of my usual realm so I was hoping for an i.d. My first instinct was some type of Geo, but didn't think their head were round enough. So then I was hoping for a Festae, but there is to much blue and not enough red. They were just put in the quarantine tank right before these pics so these probably aren't even their best colours. Anybody else ever get free fish from Petsmart? I have adopted quite a few large fish from mine. Thanks in advance! P.s. Male is close to 8 in, female probably around 6 ish.

Well I think I figured out they are Geophagus brasiliensis. Can anyone confirm? Anything I should know about them?

Hmm they are supposedly a mated pair, but who knows... Why do you say both male?

Yes looks like one of the braziliensus complex.
They are from southern Brazil, so they prefer cooler temps tan many tropicals, low 70s high 60s'F. They can reach about 12", and are semi aggressive, the warmer the temp, the more aggressive, they will eat any fish that fits in their mouth, and don't like to be housed with other similar shaped, and blue spangled fish. I kept mine in a pond in Milwaukee throughout the summer, and they spawned there.

G. brasiliensis are sexually dimorphic. Females stay quite a bit smaller and are more drab.

Sorry for the crappy photos, I had this pair back in 2005 or 2006.

I am still unclear as to why both my fish are male. To my eyes the one I think is a female is significantly more drab and smaller, but maybe you are seeing something I am not. As I said this isn't my usual area, but kinda want to know because if its a pair I will try and breed them, but if not then Ill put them in my South/Central American 220 gal community.
