not always... my petsmart ordered a arowana once but it got sold right on the spot.

as long as the customer is an experienced aquarist, petsmart can be a decent place to get some amazing deals that most local fish stores can't match. i don't make it a habit of shopping for fish at petsmart, but a few weeks ago, i went into petsmart to buy frozen food. i saw a great deal and ended up purchasing a beautiful black ghost knife for $12. the fish is about 7 inches long. he's the biggest bgk that i've everseen in a store. it was an offer i could not refuse. i've had him in my tank for a month. he's very healthy and thriving.

Not the place to go if you want something rare but your basic bread and butter fish its seems o.k. If you know what to look for in a fish doesn't matter where you buy. I like my local mom and pop place because I like odd balls and they can get just about anything I want.

I don't shop from Petsmart - - or Petco - - because I prefer the customer service and knowledge of the LFS I shop at.

if all you have in your area is a big-box pet store, then you have no choice . . .

but if you don't support your LFS, they will close down, and all you will have is the big-box pet store, and again, you'll have no choice (and yes, I know that some LFS can be pretty bad too)

also, the LFS will order unusual fish that I want, while Petsmart/Petco generally won't . . .

I got my first batch of fish from a petco 12 years ago, most died quickly but the 8 zebra danios I cycled my first tank with lasted 10 years, which counts for something. But as a generality I don't buy much of anything at petsmart since I'm friends with so many people at my lfs and have exotic tastes that the big boxes just don't cater to.

Personally, I don't care about the knowledge base of the employees. I don't even blame the employees for the lack of knowledge. They have crappy training books.
But I voted "no" because of the quality of their fish. Not only are they frequently sick, but they just don't look good. There are some 4" green severums at my local PetSmart and guess what color they are. That's right, brown. Ugly, bad genetics, bad food quality brown.

You guys act like Petsmart should have genius employees working for $7 an hour... If you researched your fish before you purchased them, you wouldn't have to complain about the employees giving bad info. For the people other than ourselves, oh well it's a major corporation and won't change, you act like it should be perfect.. I've purchased many fish from a few different ones, including my current beastly jag and sen, and have never had a problem.

If they're sick, don't buy them.
