I used to work at a Petsmart near me for a couple months. They got some decent fish, not too many died on me (unlike a local Petco). The best part about working there was that I got to spend 30 minutes "hand-picking" my fish and watching each one to find the healthiest one!
Now that I don't work there anymore, I don't buy fish from there. Although I might go back, because they carry a few fish that my lfs just doesn't have. I've asked them to order the fish, but they have different names than the normal names for some of the fish. And it's just not the same as hand-picking my fish.

I have a great petsmart near me. the fish are all very healthy and it's the only place I can get healthy pacu. and the employees actually have some experience with fish keeping.
I Voted no... I have worked for both petco and petsmart 3+ yrs at each. I enjoyed working for petsmart much more tbh. and Though I will on occasion still buy a fish from them or petco I do not like a few things.
A) their tanks are one giant system. If one tank has Ick. Every tank in that system has Ick theoretically.
B) Lack of employee training. Unless the employee is a dedicated hobbyist themselves, your better off asking them about dog food.
C) They routinely stock Bala Sharks, Pacus, Oscars, and other Monster worthy fish imo that are NOT beginner friendly.
I can not tell you how many times I had a customer come it w/ a dead goldfish in a bowl that some idiot co-worker told them "it was perfect!" But I will also say the rare few you find who work in these chains and truely do enjoy their hobby can be a gold mine of info. My manager at petsmart worked in the pet industry for 20yrs prior to her management posistion at the store. I learned more about animals from her then from any book.
It's all about who's running the store, not it's name.

my local petsmart is good in the other stuff.. not fish however...
Most Oscar and JD have some form of hole in the head or fungus/ bacteria..
I dont see how those fish can still be alive.. the scales are gone and the holes are just nasty...
The only fish that i've gotten from petsmart that are still alive are: 1 clown loch and 1 sailfin pleco.
I will comment that they get the biggest clown loach in for very cheap price. no matter how big or small..
But overall.. they are not the best place for fish.. just aquarium supplies
