Mine also got rid of their plants, except some eloda and a grass-type plant...I enjoyed going there to pick up a few live plants occasionally.

mine cut down heavily on their plant section... they used to have about 120gals of aquariums only containing plants, all of which were under the same 3 huge halide bulb systems and connected with some sort of waterfall-ish filter system. now they have 2 normally lit 20gals and those plants that come in the plastic cylinders

My petsmart still has a huge collection of plants... but sadly they never have those moss balls i want...

I feel so bad for their turtles. They had 3 african sidnecks (big ones) in a 30g. The water was so brown you couldn't see in it. No basking light.

The old stores have this layout. New ones or ones that have gotten remodeled just get the two small tanks of plants. Seriously....no buys plants. At our store we maybe sell .33 in a week(It's averaged out over a monthly basis). I loved the big waterfall system also, now we have them plants in the gelatin like substance plus the two tanks.

Petsmart is a hit or miss now my petsmart is like this:

They know a good bit about their fish and know what most illnesses are tank size needed (different from the sticker on the tank) and know what goes with what.

When dealing with fish you cant be more horrible. They gave the fish just enough to swim in and while looking at which fish i had they flipped the whole bag over.

They also gave me 4 female guppies when i said 5 .

So i guess they are OK sometimes but i only go there when my LFS doesnt have what I want.

The policy is 1/4 water to 3/4 air. That way they will not die of course. But it all depends on the fish, a senegal will need more water than a angelfish.

I prefer PetsMart 2nd to AquaBid. If people would do their flippin' research and know what they're buying and how to take care of fish they wouldn't be so apt to blame PetsMart (or PetCo) when it all goes bad. You've got to quarantine all new fish & too few people do that. It's not PetsMarts fault that fish get exposed to things before they arrive at their store. But it's the buyers fault if their other fish get ich or flukes because they were too ignorant to quarantine. I prefer PetsMart fish because they're juvies and I can watch them grow. Their main parasite problems are the 2 easiest to cure-ich & gill flukes. If people know what they're doing, what they're buying & quit blaming PetsMart for things that are ultimately their own fault the world would be a better place

It all depends on what you want

if you are looking for quality fish and an informed staff then you are rolling the dice. some stores do well others fail hard.


if you are looking for chems ferts food nets filter media yea sure no reason not to if the price is right.

i only use them for my water conditioner and some food and filter media

my "LFS" is near 45 min away and although they are huge awsome and know a lot they are too far to drive for the small stuff.

I buy dry goods there. Sometimes they have healthy fish, just a bad selection. I've seen absolutely terrible fish there, too.

Can we just agree that some are good, some are decent, and some are bad?

Near me there is only one good petsmart and one good petco. The rest are terrible and you will get wrong info left and right. But for the one good petsmart , they do have texas , jags , midas , red devil , angels , green terrors , convicts, rams , jack dempseys, oscars , and alot of other cool fish. Some young guy now runs the fish stock, and he brings in some cool fish. He doesnt know much more than how to keep them alive and feed them , but hey thats what counts!
