Hi!
I kinda just started this hobby and was curious about buffering pH values and black water extracts so i did a little read up myself on a more scientific terms for some logical explanation rather than just listening to most people saying. But before anyone starts hurling fireballs and going hulk over the keyboard to flame me, please understand that I'm only voicing out my opinions and not condemning anyone's method/beliefs whatsoever. Feed backs and advice are most welcome
Coral chips/Limestones are actually made out of limestones(calcium carbonate, CaCo3) which reacts with the acidity of your aquarium water to create calcium chloride(CaCl2) which is a alkali, therefore raising your waters pH and there is a by-product of CO2 which isn't very good for the fishes either, in all desperate attempts to raise the pH value to a healthy level for the fish we'll turn the water hard meaning that there are plenty of minerals floating around the water which its also bad for the fish environment.
And here comes the main point, if the term of hard water being water is rich with minerals(calcium chloride, chlorine etc.) wouldn't it make sense that softening the water would mean taking out the minerals instead of adding more? e.g. black water. although it provides trace elements and increase the acidity to cultivate a healthier environment for the fishes to live in but it'll add in more minerals instead of removing them?
I've got an idea DIY reverse osmosis filters but i think getting the filter materials is going to be pretty difficult and expensive plus it removes any kind of bacteria too.
