my house
HI all,
I just reacently began testing my water using test strips. I found that the tap water I use is extremely hard. Also my water always has a constant Ph of at least 8. I know and plan on buying Ph up/down to fix the problem. My question is why is my ph soo high? all my other readings are great, nitrate, nitrite....etc. Also how bad is this for my fish?:screwy:

What fish do you have? Depending on what you have the pH might not even matter. IMO dont use pH up/down cuz it'll raise your phosphates! Use RO to lower pH and to raise it use crushed coral/shell substrate.

I have the same problem with high pH and Ive been told it is high so the water pipes will last longer. How this protects the pipes i dont know?

RO is reversed osmosis water and is basically the same as de-ionized (DI) water. You dont need to worry about pH with your fish. As long as your other parameters are in order, which it looks like from the above post, you'll be fine! I'd worry about pH if you had wild fish from very particular conditions like Discus.

Don't mess with pH down. A constant pH of about 8 really wont bother them, but pH swings that could come from using too much/too little pH down, or just messing with the pH will

ok great!. thanks guys. thats a huge releif. Ill do another water change after work. the EBJDs look the same still. very lathargic.

I have the same problem with high pH tap water. I was going through pHDown like I owned stock in API.
The solution: let your new water sit out for about a week, exposed to the air. You can use a bucket, water jug, trash can, whatever as long as its clean & large enough to hold about 25% of your tank's water. I dont know how it works, but somehow the pH comes out of the water when it sits. Also, pay closer attention your GH & KH. These are more important than overall pH.
