State of chaos
Hey guys, I've been wanting to raise the pH in one of my tanks that contains Shrimp and a Snail to help them rebuilt shells and prevent shell erosion, but I couldn't find any crushed coral in any size other than a 15 lb bag, and I don't want to use buffer... also I have to keep in mind the Paleatus Cory in the tank (the lfs only had one). I also mix up alkalinity and pH a lot, and I'm certainly no chemist, so forgive me if the question is innacurate. So...what do I do at this point?

What are your tap water parameters? If you are in northeast united states you shouldn't be having problems with low tap water ph and alkalinity. I live 10 minutes away from NYC and my tap water has ph 8.5 dH 9.

Read this article. Honestly, it explains the whole thing. It's amazing.

Generally, though, a calcium supplement is best for snails and such. You can use one for a saltwater system -- these are the ones which are most available. Just buy a Calcium test kit so you can monitor those levels closely.
