ok i put to nice sized flat rock in my tank about a month ago and for some reason after i did this my water ph nitrate nitrite are thru the roof i pressue washed the rocks off before i used them but could this still be my problem i never had no problem till now

The high PH is affecting your water quality so I have to agree...take the rock(s) out of the tank and do a large water change ASAP.

I don't see how it would have effected your nitrites or nitrates. That sounds more like either you weren't finished cycling or you caused some kind of minicycle. The rock could have effected your pH, but that could also be your tapwater, have you been testing it before you add it?

If you think it's causing a problem though go ahead and take it out.

The rock could be leaching things that effect not only the pH, but alse be toxic to the bacteria. Or, the rock could be covering/smothering a good portion of the undergravel filter plate (if applicable). Or, the rock could have uneaten food or excessive poop trapped and rotting out of reach of the fish. Lots of variables.

Solution: Remove the rock, do water changes, monitor the readings. If you really like the rock and want to keep it, soak the rock/boil the rock. Not for hours, but for weeks. Maybe you can get it to the point where it is safe to put in the tank. Otherwise, you can seal the rock.
