hey all, Im having a problem with my 75 gallon tank. I recently added a rock to my tank that rasied my pH level to 8.8! So I remove the rock, do a full water change, re add my stress zyme. I have well water that is about 7.4-7.6 pH. After removing the rock and doing a full water change I tested the ph and it was at an even 7.4....about 12 hours after the full water change my ph is back in the 8s! Why would my tank pH be higher than the tap water pH after removing the rock that caused the pH increase. Should I break down my entire tank again, boil the gravel, clean the decorations and plants because i fear the rock I have some how contaminated my gravel and decorations.

Someone please help, any advice would be greatly appreciated...I would like to keep some crayfish, bala sharks, angel fish and so on in the tank.

so their are no fish in the tank right now how long has the tank been set up for?

The tank has rosey reds in it im using Stress Zyme to cycle the tank. Tank has been set up for about 5 days. I just dont understand why my ph jumped from 7.4 back to 8s after removing the rock and doing a full water change. Would it be worth breaking my tank down again but clean the gravel and decorations? Perhaps whatever that rock had in it to raise the ph got into my gravel n such? Or should I continue with the cycle?

The rock I had in my tank originally raises the ph and makes the water hard for crayfish, would fish adjust to the current pH? Im really tempted to do a full tank break down and clean everything and start fresh again.

Overreacting to problems often cause even bigger problems...

Continue cycling the tank and give a few days for the effects to fully dissappear...

Rocks affect PH by dissolving and adding minerals to the water. any minerals in your tank will continue to dissolve and get 'used up' by your water and the effects will be gone in a short time.

It's pretty simple to see what's happening here. Tap water that is given time to aerate overnight is going to rise in PH. To verify this just test your water straight from your tap, then test it from your tank. There should be PH difference between the two..........

also you shouldnt cycle with stress zyme imo get some prime or something

Yes when I tested my tap water right out of the faucet it was 7.4....after putting it in the tank it was 7.4.....24 hours later it was in the 8s.

go with this . a consistent ph is the best , even at 8.0 .
