I've had a reef tank for over two years now and it has been going great. I recently noticed over the past two days that my PH reading has been creeping higher. I've generally had readings between 8.2 and 8.3 pretty consistently over the life of the tank. The past two days I've noticed PH readings of 8.35 to over 8.4. I was wondering if anyone knew the reason for this. My Alk readings have been about 12 and the Calcium has been around 430 to 440 consistently. Also, my nitrates have been between 1 to 5. I also do weekly water changes.

I thought if the Alkalinity was high, then PH generally went down. Any thoughts?

thanks.

a buffer with water changes will keep the ph stable. might want to look into that

Do PH buffers bring the PH down? Do you know what causes the PH to rise? I thought there was something that needed to be fixed.

thanks.

also, most tanks that have been established for this long, will notice a general increase in PH. I have never seen this instance creep up to anything higher then 8.5 which is said to be dangerous.

Now it sounds to me that all your readings are right on. ALK and PH are hand in hand and one out of wack will usually through the other out of wack. You can try a buffer, but and see if that helps. Also what kind of testing material are you using. Sounds like something digital as your reffering 8.35??

I also agree that a sand stir can cause and increase, or decrease, and i usually see a decrease as the nitrogen gas is released.

a few ways i have battled any PH issue, is to ensure you have proper oxygenation in the tank, and you have good surface movement to allow gas's to escape. this has always fixed any issue i have ever come accross.

My refference for a long time. Read and see if this helps.
