My ph in my tank has been right at 7.6 naturally since I set it up. I havent been using any bufferes or salts. Am I better off just leaving it at a very consistent 7.6 or should I try and raise and maintain it to aroun 8? I am keeping malawi haps/peacocks. Thanks.

I would leave it.

but If you are going to buffer up i personally would go with Coral or coral chips or crushed coral.

Keep it constant. Either what it is now or bump it up a little. It will be easier to keep it where it is. No added buffers/salts when doing WC's.

Thats what I figured. I have just been adding prime when doing water changes but that doesnt change the ph as far as I know.

No, I use prime as well, it doesnt do anything to my ph. Don't you just love prime. One bottle does what 3 or more bottle would from some brands. Anyway try getting a handful of crushed coral and put it in your filter. It should help in buffering it up a bit. Dont worry too much about ph as long as its stable. I got by with a ph of 7.2 with my african cichlids before when I had no clue about all this requirements.

Thanks. I could probably ditch the carbon in my canister and replace it with crushed coral. Does carbon make much difference as far as the smell of the tank goes (it removes odor right?)

It does, but so do frequent WCs. Carbon will keep the water clearer. I have never used carbon, except to remove impurities after meds. I shouldn't say never, when I was a tyke, all my HOB filters contained carbon.

Well I will soon have 2 AC110's on my tank along with a canister, so I can run carbon if I really want to. I just wasnt sure how much of a difference it made.
