Bare with me because I am new to fish keeping. I have 4 juvenile red bellies in a 25 gallon tank (I know this is far to small. They are less then an inch and I am in the process of setting up a 90g). I keep the temp around 80. The more I read on MFK the more I have realized how important water testing is and I plan to start tommorrow. What PH would be should I shoot for when I buy the kit tommorrow?

how long has your tank been running? my tap is ph 8.5, i do 20% changes per week and tanks are at 7-7.5 ph, this is because the ph lowers by itself as the tank matures, also what kind of gravel or rocks do you have ? these should be lime free which wont buffer the ph. one way to lower it is to do a change or 2 using ro water(which would be of around 6.5), then you could do one change of say max 20% , then carefully monitor the readings over a week or 2 to see how it stabilizes, edit try doing a smaller change of 10% first then monitor that for a while
