Why does my PH go up when adding peat and maylasian driftwood? Thought it would go down.

I would venture a GUESS That the buffers in your water are trying to keep the water stable... But this is just a GUESS So please dont flame me

Thought PH would lower with peat and driftwood? Used two kits and they read the same. 7.8 before adding and 8.4+ after.

How long has it been running with the peat? (it's a slower process, and the initial rise maybe like Tongue33 said).
