Had to move my philodendron in out of the winter cold. No place to put huge pot in my house so i rinsed it off and stuck it in the tank for now.

My understanding is that the philodendron can not only survive but thrive as long as its leaves remain above the water level. I read its closely related to pothos. Curious to see how much nitrate it will suck up and how big it will grow.

I have pothos, a close cousin, in all my tanks. Helps keep nitrates low and the roots look really neat. My Paradise fish lives in the roots and fights anyone that comes near them.

I recently read that the leaves can be under water but they had to start there and never go out of the water. I have not tried yet but saw something about it and plan to try.

Some images of roots and the hanging vines on 2 of my tanks are attached.

I forgot to mention to watch for algae on the roots. Knock it off during water changes if you get it. I lost a lot of roots off my one plant due to them being covered.

Now I just run my finger on the root every water change and have not lost any more roots. Sorry forgot until I was looking at my tank today and saw that I need to clean my roots again.

Good call. My philodendron is actually 3 smaller ones growing together. I plan to separate them to make it more manageable.
