Hello! I am having a i think diatom algae problem in my 135 cycled tank. phosphates are high but 10ish ppm nitrates. no nitrites or ammonia. injected co2, ferts are thrive caps and easy green. can i put in phosguard for a little bit to take out some phosphates? any idea on what could be the issue?386E5687-1431-4DC2-8509-F5BD7BB1D2C4.jpeg9CDD2FCD-AEA4-4806-95E8-F8D2E7C48C04.jpeg

Plants new? How often are u planting the capsules? Could be phos and silicates. Silicates are removed via rodi. So can put in the phosguard for now atleast.

plants are probably 2ish months in my tank. adding caps 1 a month

I would suggest some devils ivy aquaponics, and loads of floating plants too. It won't solve overnight but I think it'll help a lot

How long has this been up and running? What substrate? Stock?
tanks been set up for years. recently switched to live plants but has had fish in it for years. substrate is 75% flourite 25% black diamond sand. stock is 6 angels and 2 bn plecos. was told the bns wouldn’t eat the planta by multiple people

I can not help with the phosphate issue per se.
For the plants you are showing, I would venture that you could be better off not using CO2, and easing some on the added nutrients. Just the lights (perhaps reduce duration if needed) and occasional nutrients may suffice to give you pretty good growth.
BN plecos do graze on plants some. Not terribly but they do. Some specimens become fixated on plant grazing if not fed enough otherwise, sometimes regardless (they retain habits they acquire). That they don't graze on plants is a myth, and in my personal experience a non-truth. What is true, is that the do less plant grazing than other plecos, such as 'common' plecos.
Good luck! - Beautiful angels!

If I were on your shoes I would:
-Have a massive deep clean of the tank. Removing all dead or dying leaves.. in fact removing anything that doesn't look healthy. Big water change etc. Dying leaves will only contribute to the algae problem.
-Add some aquaponic/hydroponic plants as I mentioned earlier. Devils ivy is amazing. Or consider floating plants too such as frogbit.
-Add a clean up crew, they won't eat all the algae but their contribution to your mini ecosystem is invaluable at keeping things in check. I don't know what your stock is for recommendations... but things like cherry shrimp, snails or otos. I agree with F FJB that I don't find BN plecs too great as part of a clean up crew. I've found them amazing at clearing algae short term but also amazing poop machines.
machines.
-I use CO2 and daily liquid ferts on my tanks, currently doing so just for a tank full of anubias! I haven't suffered with any algae so far *touch wood. Plants outcompete algae for what they both need to survive.. if your plants are doing well algae simply can't. But yes... you can also over-do-it with dosing and have the effect of giving enough so both algae and plants can flourish. I would keep dosing but do water change more regularly but others may say cut back.
-Finally I would review my stocking levels and decide if I were over overstocked, perhaps over feeding or maybe even both. It might be that j would thin down my stock a bit and feed a little less.

It won't clear overnight but make changes like this and you'll see improvements quickly I think.

I would recommend a massive water change/clean up and trimming, and a solid dosing with Excel. I was having all kinds of algae issues, 5 types, and it has cleared things up in just 3 weeks. Also, try some floating plants, I use water lettuce. It will make the algae compete for nutrients.

What do you keep as a clean up crew?

thanks guys! as far as a stock is just the angels and 2 bushynose plecos. did a trim. i did recently switch from t5ho to this beamswork led. online said 40ish par for my tank. maybe look into fluval lights? didnt have as much if a problem with the t5ho
