I recently got a Phosphate test kit, an am curious are Phosphates bad for fish?

As far as I know phosphates aren't bad for the fish (maybe in extreme cases), but they do promote the grown of some algaes, which may in turn be bad for the fish.

Phosphates aren't AS bad As amonia for fishes, but it will promote a brown algae boom that could steal oxygen of the water.

Is your tank planted? If so the phosphates will help the plants.

Phosphates also are a PH buffer.

But if you have no plants and high phosphates they're nothing but algae makers.

if your tank is planted HIGH phosphates can actually kill your plants. there has to be a balance of phosphate to nitrate in order for your plants to utilize it the best. you do want to keep your phosphate around 1ppm ideal for planted in most cases.
